The Free Self-Guided Route, Honestly Labeled

A two-hour drive past the famous mid-century houses - Kaufmann, Frey, Sinatra's Twin Palms, the Elvis house - with the view-from-street truth for each stop.

Updated August 2026

Here’s the page the search was looking for: a free self-guided route past Palm Springs’ famous mid-century buildings, with an honest label on every stop. No email wall, no PDF ransom. The grid is compact; allow about two hours by car, longer if the light is good.

The route

Start: Palm Springs Visitor Center (2901 N Palm Canyon Dr). Albert Frey’s 1965 Tramway Gas Station - that soaring wedge roof was built to sell gasoline. Walk-in, free, and the printed map they sell supports the preservation crowd.

Kaufmann Desert House (470 W Vista Chino). Neutra, 1946, the most photographed house in the desert. Street view only - it’s a private residence behind planting, and the famous angles are from the west side. Full story: the Kaufmann House page.

The Alexander tracts (Vista Las Palmas). Krisel’s butterfly roofs by the hundred - this is where the neighborhood itself is the exhibit, and slow cruising beats stopping.

Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway (1350 Ladera Circle). Krisel’s ‘House of Tomorrow’, four circles stacked in glass and stone. Exterior free; interior access has changed hands over the years - the honest status.

Twin Palms - Sinatra’s estate (1148 E Alejo Rd). E. Stewart Williams, 1947: the piano-shaped pool started the whole celebrity-modernism era. Hedge view from the street - which is exactly why the private walk of this neighborhood exists.

Fire Station #1 (277 N Indian Canyon). Frey again, 1952 - proof the town let its working buildings be beautiful too.

Finish: Frey House II (686 Palisades Dr) - from below. The architect’s own glass perch on the mountainside. Not visitable except on rare museum programs; the honest move is admiring the cliff line from town and putting the urge into Modernism Week tickets.

Two rules keep the free route welcome: every one of these is a private home unless labeled otherwise - curb views and photos are the deal, driveways and drones are not. And go October to May; summer’s 110°F makes even breeze block sweat.
